Support the Treaty! Ban Nuclear Weapons and the F-35
January 22 is an historic day. That’s the day the “Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons” entered into force in 2021. The treaty bans the use, threatened use, possession, development, production, testing, deployment, or transfer of nuclear weapons under international law.
The Treaty represents the will of 122 nations of the world that approved it. The U.S. has not signed the Treaty, but as more countries sign on it will be accepted as “customary international law,” and it will apply to us even if we don't approve it.
For us in Vermont the Treaty is especially relevant: The F-35 that trains from this airport is a thermonuclear bomb delivery vehicle, capable of dropping two B61-12 nuclear bombs. That makes our state a violator of the treaty. It also makes our city a legitimate military target for the nuclear missiles of Russia and China. It also makes the people in the cities and towns around the airport human shields for the F-35. And that is a war crime.
The F-35 taking off and landing in a city also puts thousands of us in danger of a crash, like the one in Texas one month ago. F-35 engine deliveries are still suspended amid ongoing investigation of that crash.
The F-35 is also climate catastrophe on steroids. It burns 22 gallons of jet fuel during every minute of flight. Training hundreds of hours a month is a disaster for the planet and for humanity.
Protect the Earth and all the people on it by calling on Congress to #GroundtheF35 and support the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons: https://www.icanw.org/.
